Blades up on two Dutch Hill turbines

COHOCTON - Residents of the Village of Cohocton are now able to see what a wind turbine looks like in their own backyards.

UPC Wind Management's wind turbine project on Dutch Hill is moving along quickly, according to Rick Towner, the company's local public outreach coordinator, and the blades and 420-foot-tall turbines at sites 2A and 4A are up.

“Those two went up last Thursday,” Towner said. “After everything was all set, it only took 15 or 20 minutes to get them up and aligned properly.”

Site 2A, the first turbine that contractor Mortenson Construction began working on Nov. 19, 2007, took 45 days to complete.

“We put the top three sections up first with the smaller crane,” Towner said. “Then the larger crane comes along and puts up the fourth section, the nacelle and the blades.”

A total of 15 turbines will be placed on Dutch Hill. UPC also is planning 32 turbines to be placed on Lent and Pine hills to the east. Three more turbines will accompany the power project's substation and connection to the main power grid on Brown Hill, about 7 miles to the south of Cohocton.

Most of the parts for the Dutch Hill turbines are on-site, with more parts coming each day, Towner said.

Work on the Pine, Lent and Brown Hill turbines will begin after the turbines on Dutch Hill are completed.
